Stones
like water are one of the fundamental elements of Japanese gardens
and the setting and placement of each individual stone is determined
by it's unique shape and form.
So finding the right stone is vital when creating a combination of
stones, as the effect is to show the many expressions of sometimes
dynamic forms and other times extremely subtle and sensitive forms
of the design.
The designers of the Japanese gardens of different times had an extremely
sophisticated sense of beauty and aestheticism and emulating any such
abstract idea yourself ultimately depends on the stone material available.
Finding suitable stones in Japan is much easier than in the west where
the emphasis is more on providing cut and prepared stone products
or supplying small rocks to garden centres which have little character.

Tradition recommends that at least one third of the stone is inset
into the ground, this roots the rock and extends the edging lines
at ground level which makes the stone appear more like a natural outcrop.
Feature Stone, in order to help you make your selection is showing
as many aspects of the master stones as possible together with dimensions.
However with smaller scenic stones one or two angles should suffice. |
